Events in Veliko Tarnovo: April

There’s a lot happening in Veliko Tarnovo over the next few days so it’s going to be a busy week! If you live nearby or are visiting the area then it’s a good time to come to enjoy the festivities.
Firstly, the International Tourism Fair in Veliko Tarnovo hosts it’s 11th year and is supported by the Like. Bulgaria campaign. It’s aim is to promote Bulgaria’s heritage though special events and activities held by tourist sectors, NGOs, municipalities and investors. Veliko Tarnovo has already earned the title of Balkan Capital of Cultural Tourism and the city’s museums and cultural centres explore the potential for cultural tourism development through their events program. It kicks off on Wednesday, 9 April, 7pm at UTC+03 and goes on until the 13th April.

Coinciding with the International Tourism Fair is the Tourfilm Festival where artistic representatives from the art and film world continue the touristic theme in Bulgaria with films, discussions and events throughout city’s venues. From the 10th to 13th of April, productions will be shown from contributors across Europe which aim to promote tourism, film making and their trends through cultural and historical heritage.

If you want to escape the city by the end of the weekend, travel out to the village of Nikyup, just north of Tarnovo for a day of Roman festivities and re-enactments in Nicopolis ad Istrum. Below is an extract from their promotion, hosted by the Tourist Information Centre.
‘On April 13, 2014 Archaeological reserve Nicopolis ad Istrum Nikyup near the village will become a major venue for antique reproductions from the Roman Empire. Among the ruins of the ancient city to the village Nikyup will ” come alive ” ancient rituals , crafts, Vestals , legionaries and noble Roman patricians .
With vivid pictures in the game time will join the group of antique reproductions ” First Thracian Cohort ” and ” First Italic Legion ” at the Council of Tourism – Svishtov . Will be presented military demonstrations , reenactments of crafts – blacksmithing , coinage , archery , an ancient Roman cuisine.
Among the ruins of the Agora will be presented Roman wedding. The ancient ritual to drama studio center ” Consent ” in Debeletz .
During the day there will be a tour of lectures and an opportunity for a picnic – a nice blend of nature walks with a touch of the ancient past .’
