Art Hostel Sofia
Entering the garden, you are struck by the vibrant images created by various artists that adorn the walls surrounding the greenery. Every bit of wall space has been painted or sprayed with graffiti-like art which reveals itself as an open air gallery. Even when we were being showed around, another artist was busying himself with designing his vision on the walls inside this old building and you instantly get the feeling that this is somewhere inspiring to stay.
Situated close to some of Sofia’s central tourist spots, museums, galleries and markets, the Art Hostel is a welcomed stay if you want to explore Bulgaria’s capital city. Housed in a building which hasn’t lost its feelings of bygone grandeur, luxurious comfort might not be prevalent, but for relaxation and friendliness, it certainly wins over a guests’ stay.
Its laid-back atmosphere offers an ideal alternative after a day on the tourist trail and there are a variety of different sized rooms and dorms to choose from many of which have high ceilings and artistic creations. It has all the usual amenities you’d expect from a hostel and you’d be hard-pushed to want for anything while you’re staying there so unless you’re a traveler in need of the finer comforts in life, this place ticks all boxes.
In the basement bar we are offered complimentary shots while locals and travelers chat over the sounds of a Sex Pistols documentary. All the staff is both friendly and helpful and the social atmosphere continues into the wee hours. Although there was no special event on the night we stayed, they host a variety of artistic and music events on a regular basis but we were happy enough spending time gazing at the huge range of artwork that decorate nearly every bit of space.
Switch to the morning and the lively bar rooms double up as somewhere to have your free, generous helping of breakfast which is laid out on a fantastic, suspended table and sofas for a chill zone to work through the hangover!
